VNU BUSINESS MEDIA EUROPE REINFORCES ITS ONLINE PORTFOLIO WITH A MAJORITY ACQUISITION OF “SILICON.FR”
A leading French website aimed at new technology professionals
VNU Business Media Europe (BME) based in London, has taken a majority interest of Silicon.fr (www.silicon.fr), one of the leading technology news websites in the market. This investment is part of the current strategy of VNU to reinforce its online portfolio and to transform its activity into a true cross media organization. VNU BME announces the acquisition of Silicon one week after it acquires the UK technology website “The Inquirer”.
Alongside the cross-media leading brands of VNU Publications France (SVM, SVM Mac, Expert PC, Direct PC and CRN), the VNUnet network in France, www.vnunet.fr, is one of the top IT communities and reaches a large population of professionals and registered users. With the Silicon.fr acquisition, VNUnet France will become the first network of websites in the IT news sector, with a readership of more than 2 million unique visitors in France.
Launched in December 2000 with editorial director Pierre Mangin (co-founder of `Silicon.fr'), the site became, in a few years, the essential player in IT information online. Its’ global and B2B vision of the market, its independence and the critical tone of its journalists have been the key to the success of this site whose traffic continues to progess, doubling each year.
“Silicon.fr” has built a database of almost 100,000 qualified members over the years, making up a valuable, well informed and influential readership. This very demanding group of readers is considered difficult to reach through the principal channels of the traditional media.
“By adding Silicon.fr to our French online portfolio, we are able to reach additional professional readers thus providing an enriched and unique offering to customers in the French market” said Dominique Busso, CEO of VNUnet.
Pierre Mangin, Director of “Silicon.fr” states: “It is a fantastic opportunity for our daily website specialising in B2B technologies information.
This backing from a giant of the “high tech” media will consolidate our position in France and in a number of French-speaking countries. The resources and extent of the VNU international network will clearly enable us to accelerate our growth. ”
Dominique Busso adds: “By joining our internet business VNUnet, Silicon.fr not only supplements our online publications, it will invigorate them and bring a new dimension, confirming our leading position and common ambitions in the European market of online information.
